Today I thought I’d share with you how I set up my wordpress.com blog. I’ve been blogging since April 26th 2016, which was a year and 5 months ago! (547 days) This is a different kind of post!
I’ve not been as frequent as I would have liked to be back when I first started blogging, but since then I’ve learnt a lot about blogging in general. I’ve never done a how-to post, so i’m going to give this a good go!
Where to Start –
Starting a blog is a lot easier than people think. The first think you need to do is go to WordPress.com, and select the option in the top right corner which says ‘get started’.
After clicking this, you’ll be greeted with a page giving you four different options. The first is the one you want to go for. Click start with a blog, and after that you’ll be taken to the next page.
The next part is the trickier part of setting up your blog. Being creative with setting up your blog name. I actually started this blog as abim0ss.wordpress.com before I bought my own custom URL. You don’t have to be as creative or adventurous as you think you might have to be, but started off basic is just an easy way to get started.
After you’ve chosen your URL, you’ll be taken to a page where you get to choose the plan you want to have for your time creating and uploading posts to your blog. There are a few options –
These options are all decent enough, but to start experimenting with your blog, and especially if you’re just seeing how its going to go, I’d recommend picking the free option. This is the easiest option you can choose as its completely and utterly free with no extra charges on top of it unless you choose a theme that requires a cost, or any plugins requiring costs.
And finally, you’ll be given your dashboard! This is where you will be able to follow any other WordPress blogs. For an example, I just followed mine to give you an idea of what the layout will look like.
Another key aspect in your blog will be the button in the top left corner. This is where you can overall see your site and look at how your blog is performing. This is what the page looks like.
The stats page is the most useful thing within my blog that I’ve found. I know which posts performed well, and got good feedback. The great thing about having the stats page is it gives you the places people found your blog, and links you’ve used in your blog that people have clicked. It also tells you the countries people have come from!
And that’s it! Those are the basics to creating your own blog. Quite a few people like friends ask me how I set mine up so quick and fast and this is all I did! I’ve learnt different things along the way such as plugins and themes and the different widgets.
But if you would like me to expand on some more things about creating your own blog, let me know in a comment!
If you have recently set up a blog, leave it in the comments and I’ll check it out!
